My boss had a USB drive stolen once, and thankfully it was cryptsetupped
to death. Which was a good thing because it was loaded up with critical information.

I used to carry a USB thumbdrive in a "sock" holder that was
designed to clip to my set of keys. I had the habit of hooking
the keys into my back pocket and let some of the keys hang
outside the pocket. One day, coming out of a grocery store and
reaching for my keys to unlock the car, I noticed that the clump
of keys seemed different. Apparently the dedicated USB holder
had fallen off! I went back into the store to see if I could
find it on the floor anywhere. I left a lost-n-found request
with management. Never found it. The thumbdrive had a copy of
my shop database files (MS Access format) and a few other key
files with biz info. The database file contained full credit
card info that I needed with some of my suppliers. It also had
an ongoing text file that I used to make notes - I really missed
that one most of all because a copy of it didn't exist anywhere
else.
A couple days later, I noticed some unauthorized purchases with
the cards!
Who ever found the thumbdrive worked fast. They could have
turned it in since the database file had plenty of clues that it
belonged to me. It was a fine 16GB drive.

Even stock Synchronet can track threads, but I think it is good nettiquete to quote what you are responding to, if just to prevent people from having to backtrack and read the original post. Specially when the original post

There are instructions on line to build a USB-port/computer
destroying USB drive.
My inner cat is telling me to build one and hang it off the
back of my pants on in a "sock" and go to the grocery
store. 8)
Yes, I usually don't feel like tracking down the post that was being replied to. Quoting makes it so much easier to follow the conversation.

Man, that sucks.
You know, I am the paranoia man everybody laughs at.
Everybody laughs when I put the secret documents in a safe,
and when I get angry when somebody else does not.
Everybody laughs when I tell them no cameras, microphones or
phones are allowed near my computers or my stuff.
Everybody laughs when I place my computers in a dhcpless
network, with both IPs and ARP statically configured and
host-to-host IPSEC encryption (to be honest, I laugh at this
one myself too).
Everybody laughs because I keep a checksum of every file in
storage, which is checked periodically for corruption or
tampering.
Then somebody loses the secret documents, or gets them
stolen, or gets ransomware in a computer with no recovery
options, and nobody fucking laughs.
I have a nice collection of "I told you so" moments, and I
never go "I told you so" because, deep down, I am a good
guy. However, nobody ever realizes it was an "I told you so"
moment. A day later they are still laugthing at me.
In conclusion:
Fuck this place. And encrypt your data when it is out of
premises.

The usbkill.com ? Interesting concept, but is the drive usable
as a genuine storage device? It looks like it's intended to zap computers. But it doesn't look like it's a throwaway at $150 a
piece.
I would rather build one with an executable file desguised as a
text file (mysecrets.txt) and then just have that run to first
delete its own usb contents and then delete a core system file
on the host.
What would be a good procedure to encrypt a usb drive that I
would access daily? I use the drive between my XP and Win7
systems interchangeably.

Nice. That's better than nothing. :)
BTW.. OpenXP can sift and search using the subject/author method
too. :D

Yup. That's its intent. It's completely malicious and designed to hurt
bad people who like to steal other people's USB drive.

And for me, it's generally very inconvenient for me to
