  • What BBS software are you running?

    Hi,

    This is targetted at those running their BBS on an Amiga in some form.

    Which BBS software are you running, and why?

    I've seen a few recently, e.g. CNet or Zeus, but not found it easy to track down the files for them to give them a go. E.g. Zeus web site seems to be down.

    Zeus is develloped by your host: Neil Williams. So you should talk to him. Also
    ask him to send in a nodelist update to me, because you are not in it yet!

    I'm not currently running an Amiga BBS but I have run all of Daydream, System Express (eSSeXX), and Amiga Express (/x). The latter option here is interesting
    because it has undergone a complete from-scratch rewrite in E and is still being maintained, so if you are into those types of more "scene" style BBSes, /x could be interesting for you.

    Google search will come up with a few sites having the zeus files. I came across a couple that even had key files for download. (This was as recent
    as a few weeks, and I'm not going to share.)

    The zeus demo on aminet makes it look really good, and the software does
    do a good job, and it has many great fetures.... BUT there are many
    _unfixed bugs_, and frankley the auther has given up acting on them or
    fixing them.

    One of Zeus's selling point's is that 99% of things are sysop
    configurable, as many support parts of the bbs are written using rexx.

    Personally I hate the user interface to CNet, even though the software is getting updates. The same can be said about Ami/x. Ami/x was caterd and
    heavly used in the "wares" sceen.

    I run C-Net on a Emulated Amiga 4000, I chose C-Net because I was a fan of it back in the 90's and it was/is still being updated.. Unfortunately, the Amiga BBS I ran back in the 90's (Excelsior!) is not longer updated and the source code was never released thus leaving it dead (It is not Y2K compliant)..

    As for getting C-Net if you only want to play around with it google C-Net 3.05c
    and grab it install it and play with it, if you want to go full blown and run it for callers, K-Guide from Future World II can make it available to you, he runs a website also www.cnetbbs.net which will give you his email address.. Good luck and most of all have fun!!

    I also run C-Net on a PC using WinUAE. My Amiga BBS has been up for over 12 years now on Telnet. I am working on 2 Amigas currently a A1200 and A500 (which I will be selling the A500 once I get it all up and working). The A1200 I will try and run C-Net Amiga on it once it is ready. I also run C-Net for the C64 and C-Net for the C128. The C64 BBS is on a real Commodore and the
    C128 is emulated on Vice.

    Hi Tris,

    I am running Zeus v1.7 on a 1200/030 with 32mb of memory and 2 16gb Compact Flash drives. Brought my bbs back online in April of 2018 running Excelsior!, the same software I ran back in the 90s when I shutdown my BBS.
    I discovered when trying to connect to Fidonet that the software isn't Y2k compatible and without a fix to the code can't be made to use Fidonet or other networks. Because of this in August of 2018 I moved over to Zeus. I had a ton
    of help setting the software up from Stephen at Dragon's Lair who had been running it for quite a while.

    I chose Zeus because I've never really cared for C-Nets interface and most Amiga boards are using it. As far as I know I am currently the only active Zeus BBS online and Zeus is quite different from C-Net in appearance and in my opinion general ease of use for the users.

    It does have a few bugs but I have been able to keep mine up with a few tricks (many thanks to Stephen at Dragon's Lair for some of these) and pretty stable while running Fidonet as well as other FTN networks. You can try it at ciaamiga.org:6400 or www.ciaamiga.org

    If you wish to gain access to the FTN networks you'll need to login with your real name as some echoes require real names in them. There is also a place in the login for aliases/handles you can use.

    If you decide to go with Zeus, let me know and I'll be glad to do whatever I can to help you get it set up.
