Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2023 July 18 [2]A mountaintop is shown covered by brush. Across the horizon are several telescopes. Behind the mountaintop is a deep exposure of the sky showing the central band of our Milky Way galaxy and several well-known stars and nebulas. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Milky Way above La Palma Observatory Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Marcin Rosadziński Explanation: What's happening in the night sky? To help find out, telescopes all over the globe will be [4]pointing into deep space. [5]Investigations will include trying to understand the [6]early universe, finding and tracking [7]Earth-menacing asteroids, searching for [8]planets that might contain extra-terrestrial life, and [9]monitoring stars to help better understand our Sun. The [10]featured composite includes foreground and background images taken in April from a mountaintop on [11]La Palma island in the [12]Canary Islands of [13]Spain. Pictured, several telescopes from the [14]Roque de los Muchachos Observatory are shown in front of a dark night sky. Telescopes in the foreground include, left to right, [15]Magic 1, [16]Galileo, [17]Magic 2, [18]Gran Canarian, and [19]LST. Sky highlights in the background include the [20]central band of our [21]Milky Way Galaxy, the constellations of [22]Sagittarius, [23]Ophiuchus and [24]Scorpius, the red-glowing [25]Eagle and [26]Lagoon Nebulas, and the stars [27]Alrami and [28]Antares. Due to [29]observatories like this, [30]humanity has understood more about our [31]night sky in the past 100 years than ever before in all of [32]human history.
